In partnership among the City of Saint Paul, Public Art Saint Paul, and Saint Paul Almanac, poems were selected from the Sidewalk Poetry contest to be stamped into sidewalks in the city of Saint Paul. Sidewalk Poetry allows city residents to claim the sidewalks as their book pages. In this project, Public Works repairs 10 miles of sidewalk each year. The department has stamped more than 1,200 poems all written by Saint Paul residents. Today, everyone in Saint Paul now lives within a 10-minute walk of a Sidewalk Poem. The 2019 and 2021 contest winners are published in Almanac volumes Resistance and Resilience and A Path to Each Other.
This art project began in 2008 with former Public Art Saint Paul City Artist Marcus Young under the name “Everyday Poems for City Sidewalks.” The project continues today as Sidewalk Poetry.
